Chapter 1[]
Near a stream a once-pretty otter fell to the ground, screeching in pain, its body torn and bruised and, most horribly of all, burned with a green liquid.
Somewhere else, deep in the heart of the same forest an elk fell to its knees, scarred the same way.
In a meadow a lion roared out in pain, lying down on the tall grass and flowers, covered with the green scars.

The wind howled and the air rumbled as a bright flash came from the dark clouds.
"This is one storm," Remarked Gwen O'Mally as she pressed her face to the window, watching the drops of silver-gray run down the window.
"Certainly is." Agreed Gwen's mother, Madison O'Mally. "And no one is going to be out traveling in this storm. Certainly not us."
"Mom! You promised!" Protested Gwen.
